2019 Running Back Profiles

by Hayden Winks
Updated On: March 25, 2019, 4:27 pm ET

The running backs are listed in alphabetical order by first name. You’ll see where each of these prospects rank historically by looking at the percentiles in the prospect profile, which includes these categories:

  • Yardage Score: The percentile rank of my model that is projecting NFL rushing yards per game.
  • Touchdown Score: The percentile rank of my model that is projecting NFL rushing touchdowns per game.
  • Receiving Score: The percentile rank of my model that is projecting NFL receiving yards per game.
  • Athleticism Score: The percentile rank of a running back’s athleticism, using a similar (but better) model to the one I shared above.
  • Advanced Analytics: My completely arbitrary percentile ranking of new stats that don’t have historical data. Data includes explosive plays, broken tackles, yards after contact, and a lot more. Really digest this one with a grain of salt because it has zero historical data, so I have no idea if it matters or not.

YPC vs. Teammates: +2.0 (5th)

Speed Score: 102 (8th)

250 Characters or Less: A sleeper before the Combine, I’m now going to be lower than consensus on Barnes after showing athleticism in drills that have historically not mattered. Barnes had a quality final season but didn’t produce much earlier in his career. Committee back. Draft Over/Under: 100

Career stats:  581 - 2,829 - 33 and 60 - 511 - 1

Marginal Efficiency: 48.7% (14th)

Hlt Yards Per Opportunity: 3.9 (24th)

Negative Rushing Yards %: 9% (11th)

8+ Rushing Yards %: 23% (11th)

20+ Rushing Yards %: 3% (25th)

Red Zone TD%: 26% (5th)

YPC vs. Teammates: +1.2 (11th)

TD% vs. Teammates: +2.7% (6th)

Speed Score: 93 (18th)

250 Characters or Less: Has two 1,000-yard, 12-touchdown seasons and he’s not even 21 years old. Known as a powerful runner, Mattison quietly caught 25+ receptions in back-to-back seasons too. Would have a bell-cow profile if he showed more athleticism (4.67-second forty). Draft Over/Under: 150

Career stats:  737 - 3,873 - 48 and 29 - 216 - 0

Marginal Efficiency: 50.9% (8th)

Hlt Yards Per Opportunity: 4.1 (23rd)

Negative Rushing Yards %: 9% (11th)

8+ Rushing Yards %: 21% (23rd)

20+ Rushing Yards %: 4% (13th)

Non-Red Zone TD%: 1.7% (14th)

Red Zone TD%: 20% (13th)

YPC vs. Teammates: +0.2 (23rd)

TD% vs. Teammates: +0.9% (12th)

Speed Score: 95 (16th)

250 Characters or Less: Had three-straight 1,000-yard, 13-touchdown seasons as an 18-, 19-, and 20-year old. Finished inside the top-5 in yards after contact in 2018 but never showed receiving ability and didn’t test well at the Combine, limiting his projected upside. Draft Over/Under: 85

Career stats: 569 - 3,865 - 30 and 49 - 465 - 2

Marginal Efficiency: 42.8% (24th)

Hlt Yards Per Opportunity: 5.6 (11th)

8+ Rushing Yards %: 23% (11th)

Red Zone TD%: 11% (23rd)

YPC vs. Teammates: +1.4 (10th)

TD% vs. Teammates: -0.8% (20th)

Speed Score: TBD

250 Characters or Less: Love fell apart (ankle, ACL) in 2018 after rushing for 2,118 yards as a 20-year old. When healthy, Love has high-end speed, so it’s fine to chase his upside late. Love also has underrated strength, finishing 1st in % of yards coming after contact. Draft Over/Under: 175
