After Wednesday’s loss, Detroit has only won one of its last 13 games and a lot of the contests haven’t even been close. The Rangers earned a 5-1 win against Detroit last night, but on top of that Detroit lost 6-1 to Nashville on Monday, 4-0 to Florida on Saturday, and 7-3 to Carolina on Friday. The season is still young, but there isn’t a lot of hope for the Red Wings this season.
In the long run though, there is cause for optimism. Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Dylan Larkin are all still in their early-to-mid 20s and have developed into solid contributors. In another season or two, Filip Zadina and Moritz Seider might be up with the Red Wings too in what would be a pretty strong core. If they continue to struggle like this in 2019-20, they might end up with the top draft prospect Alexis Lafreniere on top of that. Granted, that scenario might never end up happening, but the Red Wings are definitely looking like a team that needs to look more towards the future than the present. That can be frustrating when Detroit is facing a fourth straight season of missing the playoffs, but that appears to be the reality of the situation.
