Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees betting preview
Zack Godley RHP (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Masahiro Tanaka RHP (2019: 11-9, 4.45 ERA)
The fact Zack Godley is getting regular starts for the Red Sox right now shows just how ugly the Boston rotation is this season. It’s been a rough couple of years for Godley, as the right-hander has a 5.16 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 66 games (41 starts) since 2018. That said, he got his BoSox career off to a solid start, giving up zero runs on four hits while striking out seven in four innings of work versus the Mets.
Meanwhile, Masahiro Tanaka makes his first start of the 2020 season for New York. The right-hander missed most of Summer camp after taking a Giancarlo Stanton liner off the head back on July 4. Tanaka and the Yankees are lucky he’s ready to go already, because that injury could have been much worse and he is a crucial piece to New York’s World Series aspirations.
It should be a beautiful night for baseball in New York. Temperatures will hover around the low-80s with relatively low humidity. There will also be a slight 10 mph wind gusting out to left. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our MLB weather info.
Betting trend to know
The rivalry has been a little one-sided recently when these two teams face off in the Bronx as the Red Sox are just 10-25 in their last 35 games at Yankee Stadium. Find more MLB betting trends for Red Sox vs. Yankees.
Yankees Team Total Pick
OK, admittedly this bet burned me by a half-run yesterday in our MLB Picks piece, but we’re going back to the well for Game 2. The Yanks lineup is just too dangerous from top to bottom and they match up pretty well against Godley. The right-hander made one start against the Yankees as a member of the Blue Jays last season and lasted just three innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Godley doesn’t really go deep into games anymore, so he will have to hand the ball to a Red Sox bullpen that is surrendering a .268 batting average to opponents, the fifth-worst mark in the Majors. A Yankees lineup that is sixth in runs per game and OPS should be able to get there today.
PREDICTION: Yankees Team Total Over 5.5 (-115)
Well, we like the Yankees to score at least six runs, so we’re hoping the Red Sox can do the rest of the work and get us Over this number.
The BoSox have been decent at the dish early on this season, ranking third in batting average and 10th in OPS. But more importantly, they have dominated Tanaka the past few seasons. Tanaka has made seven starts against the Red Sox the past two years and has a 12.67 ERA in those games. That is not a typo. (The WHIP is also an ugly 2.33).
It’s also hard to know what type of condition Tanaka is in after missing most of camp. He might not be long for this game.
PREDICTION: Over 10 (-114)
While this historic rivalry is always emotionally charged, these two teams just aren’t on the same level right now. There is a reason the Yankees are among the World Series favorites and the Red Sox aren’t. With Tanaka healthy, the rotation is solid. The lineup is of course devastating. And now closer Aroldis Chapman has been cleared to play.
For this game in particular, the Red Sox pitching (specifically the bullpen) won’t hold up to the Bronx Bombers over nine innings. And while Tanaka has traditionally struggled against Boston, the Yankees have enough reliever depth on their side to back him up. There is value with the home team to walk away with a win by a couple of runs.
PREDICTION: Yankees -1.5 (+100)
