Power Play Report

Leafs spreading it around

by Michael Finewax
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the only team in the NHL who do not have at least one player playing 100 or more minutes on the power play. The Leafs spread their power play around so much that they don’t even have anyone who has played 90 minutes on the power play.

James van Riemsdyk leads Toronto in pp time with 89:52. That’s 157th in the NHL, meaning on average, every team’s first five players play more than the Leafs top gun. Plus six others as that gets you to 156.

The thing is that the Maple Leafs are tied for 12th in power play goals with 25 but are tied for 27th in pp opportunities. Even so, Mike Babcock likes to spread things around in Toronto and it seems to be working out.
