The Week Ahead

Shark Attack

Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

There was not a lot of news coming out of NHL cities this week as more than half the league had their mandated five day by week.

It’s a good move by the PA and the NHL but I would have done it the week before the All-Star Break as well as a week after to give the players a lengthy break.

There is plenty of information and good chatter always on the Rotoworld Hockey Podcast. Listen here.

4 Games – Anaheim, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Vegas

3 Games – Arizona, Colorado, Nashville, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto, Washington

2 Games - Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit, Florida, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Winnipeg

1 Game - Calgary, Chicago, Columbus, Edmonton, Minnesota

Dallas, San Jose and Vegas play all four games on the road.

Anaheim, Colorado, Los Angeles and Nashville play three games at home.

Pittsburgh plays all three games on the road.

INJURIES

Zach Bogosian is out six-eight weeks with a lower body injury. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Colorado, vs. Pittsburgh, vs. Los Angeles, vs. San Jose

Rested Team: vs. Los Angeles (Friday), vs. San Jose (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Ducks play four times this week so Ryan Miller will likely see the crease once with John Gibson playing three times. The Ducks sent Kevin Roy and Ondrej Kase to the minors during their break to get some playing time in. Corey Perry returned to the Anaheim lineup on Saturday for the first time in 12 games. The Ducks have five shorthanded goals this season with defensemen Brandon Montour and Cam Fowler each having one. Rickard Rakell leads the Ducks with three power play goals as well as 15 goals this season. Kevin Bieksa has 61 penalty minutes.

ARIZONA

Games this week

vs. San Jose, @ Nashville, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: vs. San Jose (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Coyotes swung a deal this week, sending disgruntled forward Anthony Duclair to Chicago along with defenseman Adam Clendening and received Richard Panik and Laurent Dauphin in return. Dauphin was drafted by Arizona in the second round of the 2013 Draft by the Coyotes but they sent him to the Blackhawks in the off-season as part of the Niklas Hjalmarsson trade. Panik should be a third line player in Arizona and possibly a second liner. Derek Stepan has both of the Coyotes shorthanded goals. Christian Fischer, Clayton Keller, Brendan Perlini and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each have four power play goals. Ekman-Larsson is a minus-34 this season.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Dallas, vs. Montreal, @ New York Islanders, @ Montreal

Rested Team: @ Montreal (Saturday)

Tired Team: @ New York Islanders (Thursday)

Notes

The Bruins play four times this week including three games in four nights. Expect to see Anton Khudobin play once with Tuukka Rask getting the call three times. The Bruins play Montreal twice this week and also played them last week so tempers could flare at any time. Brad Marchand and Kevan Miller are likely to add to their penalty minute count if there is a fight. Patrice Bergeron was the first star of the week with five goals and seven points in three games. The Bruins have three shorthanded goals with Bergeron, Marchand and Danton Heinen each having one. Bergeron and Marchand lead the Bruins with five power play goals apiece. Miller leads with 54 penalty minutes.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Zach Bogosian is out for four-six weeks with a lower body injury suffered during practice on Wednesday. He collided with Evander Kane. It was not a good practice for Kane as he got into a shoving and shouting match with Justin Falk at the same practice as Falk called him out for being selfish. Look for Kane, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, to be dealt at or before the trade deadline. Jacob Josefson is day-to-day with a lower body injury. Kane has three of the four Sabres shorthanded goals. Ryan O'Reilly leads with six goals on the power play. Jordan Nolan has 43 penalty minutes.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

What a season Micheal Ferland is having. The winger was definitely considered a bottom-six forward heading into the season as he has only 19 goals and 24 assists in 147 games over his last two seasons. But a move to the top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau after an earlier injury to Jaromir Jagr worked out amazingly and he has 19 goals and 28 points in 42 games. He has a goal and an assist in each of his last four games as well. It looks like Jagr and the Flames will part company once Jagr is healthy. Michael Frolik has scored two of the Flames three shorthanded goals with Mark Giordano garnering the other. Monahan has seven goals on the power play. Troy Brouwer has 49 penalty minutes.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Detroit, vs. Vegas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team:  vs. Vegas (Sunday)

Notes

The big news out of Carolina is that Tom Dundon has officially purchased a majority interest in the Hurricanes from Peter Karmonos Jr. with Karmonos retaining a minority share in the team. Noah Hanifin will be the Hurricanes representative in the All-Star game. Jordan Staal scored a shorthanded goal on Thursday to give him two this season, the only Hurricane to score with the man-disadvantage. The Hurricanes have four players with three power play goals including Sebastian Aho, Jeff Skinner, Teuvo Teravainen and Elias Lindholm. Justin Williams leads Carolina with only 27 penalty minutes, one ahead of Justin Faulk and Marcus Kruger.

 CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blackhawks did not give up a lot for the services of Anthony Duclair as Richard Panik and Laurent Dauphin head off to Arizona. Duclair scored 20 goals as a rookie a couple of seasons back and although he has struggled since with a stint in the minors last year, he still has top-six skills. They also received Adam Clendening but he is just a depth defenseman at best. The Blackhawks made Brent Seabrook a healthy scratch this week for the first time in his 14 year career and he responded with his second goal of the season in his next game back. Tommy Wingels leads with two shorthanded goals. The injured Artem Anisimov has seven goals on the power play while John Hayden has 43 penalty minutes.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, vs. San Jose, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

It appears that Semyon Varlamov may not be ready to return to the Avs lineup from a lower body injury as Andrew Hammond was recalled on Thursday. Jonathan Bernier excelled in the Avs net during the absence of Varlamov and was rewarded as he was the second star of the week. Bernier was 3-0 with a 1.60 GAA and a .957 save percentage. Nathan MacKinnon is having his best season to date in the NHL with 18 goals and 52 points in 41 games. He is in a four-way tie for second place in NHL scoring. Blake Comeau and J.T. Compher each have a pair of shorthanded goals. Mikko Rantanen and MacKinnon have seven power play goals while Erik Johnson has 48 minutes in the penalty box.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

vs. Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Joonas Korpisalo was sent to the minors in order to get in some work. Matiss Kivlenieks was recalled but will likely be glued to the bench until Korpisalo returns. David Savard was fined $5,000 for slashing Vincent Trocheck of the Panthers. Artemi Panarin has only 12 goals (along with 25 assists) in 45 games but has five in his last 10 contests. Matt Calvert has the lone shorthanded goal for Columbus thus far. Pierre-Luc Dubois is having a fine rookie season and leads the Blue Jackets with three power play goals. Nick Foligno has 32 penalty minutes, one ahead of Boone Jenner.

DALLAS

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Detroit, @ Columbus, @ Buffalo

Rested Team: @ Detroit (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Stars play all four games on the road including three in four nights. Kari Lehtonen should get at least one start and maybe a couple while Ben Bishop will therefore get two or three starts in net. Michael Paliotta was traded from the Toronto Marlies to the Texas Stars (part of the Dallas chain) Thursday. Tyler Seguin will play in the All-Star game along with John Klingberg. Klingberg is on a five game scoring streak. Radek Faksa, Seguin, Mattias Janmark and Devin Shore each have one shorthanded goal. Seguin leads with eight power play goals while Antoine Roussel has 75 penalty minutes.

DETROIT

Games this week

vs. Dallas, vs. Carolina

Rested Team: vs. Dallas (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Gustav Nyquist has six goals in his last nine games to give him 14 this season. He had only 12 in 76 games in 2016-17. Mike Green will be the Red Wings lone player at the All-Star game. I thought Petr Mrazek would come back a bit after last season’s debacle but he has been worse this year. He is 3-5-1 with a 3.78 GAA and a .885 save percentage. The one thing the Red Wings are doing well is scoring shorthanded with seven goals, led by Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen. Anthony Mantha has found the back of the net six times on the power play. Luke Witkowski has 39 penalty minutes to lead the Red Wings but 27 came in a game against Calgary on November 15.

EDMONTON

Games this week

vs. Vancouver

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Oilers begin a stretch of playing four games over the next three weeks so start benching most of them in weekly transaction pools. The Oilers picked up Al Montoya from Montreal via a trade and sent Laurent Brossoit to the minors. Montoya should provide the struggling Oilers with better back up goaltending. Rumors have the Oilers looking to deal Anton Slepyshev. Connor McDavid is going to the All-Star game. Big surprise there. Mark Letestu and Leon Draisaitl each have two shorthanded goals. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has four power play goals. Milan Lucic and Patrick Maroon each have 55 minutes in penalties.

FLORIDA

Games this week

vs. Vegas, @ Nashville

Rested Team: vs. Vegas (Friday)

Tired Team: @ Nashville (Saturday)

Notes

Roberto Luongo has been out of action since December 4 but could be back to play from a lower body injury in early February. James Reimer has started the last 17 games in a row. He needs a break. Aleksander Barkov is off to the All-Star game for the first time in his NHL career. Aaron Ekblad scored on Tuesday to snap a 12 game pointless streak. Barkov has four shorthanded goals and that leads the NHL. The Panthers have eight as a team. Vincent Trocheck leads with six power play markers, two ahead of Jonathan Huberdeau. Micheal Haley has 87 penalty minutes in 41 games to lead Florida. Huberdeau has seven points in his last four games.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

vs. San Jose, vs. Pittsburgh, @ Anaheim, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team:  vs. Pittsburgh (Thursday), vs. New York Rangers (Sunday)

Tired Team: @ Anaheim (Friday)

Notes

The Kings play three games in four nights as part of a four game week. Jonathan Quick should get three starts in the cage with Darcy Kuemper getting one start. Anze Kopitar and Quick will play in the All-Star game. Trevor Lewis is up to 10 goals as the Kings approach the halfway mark of the season. His career high is 12, set last season. Jussi Jokinen has only a goal and six points in 32 games this season. This could be his last season in the NHL. Lewis and Drew Doughty have the only two shorthanded goals for the Kings this season. Dustin Brown and Tyler Toffoli each have five power play goals. Kurtis MacDermid leads the Kings with 52 penalty minutes.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

vs. Tampa Bay

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

It was a very good move the Wild made last season when signing UFA Eric Staal. Staal has revitalized his career in Minnesota and will be the Wild’s representative at the All-Star game. He has 19 goals and 37 points in 44 games this season. Nino Niederreiter should be out until the Tampa Bay game at the earliest as he has a lower body injury. Zach Parise has only one assist in five games this season. Staal leads the Wild with two shorthanded goals, one ahead of Charlie Coyle, Luke Kunin and Jason Zucker. Niederreiter leads in power play goals with six while Marcus Foligno has 45 penalty minutes to leads the Wild.

MONTREAL

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders, @ Boston, @ Washington, vs. Boston

Rested Team: @ Washington (Friday)

Tired Team: vs. Boston (Saturday)

Notes

The Habs play three games in four nights as part of a four game week. Carey Price will get three starts with Antti Niemi (shudder) getting the call once. The Canadiens play the Bruins twice this week after playing them last week as well so there could be fisticuffs. If so, look for Andrew Shaw to lead the path to the penalty box. Carey Price will be the Habs rep at the All-Star game. GM Marc Bergevin would rather have Jonathan Drouin on the wing but the Canadiens are in desperate need of a center so that’s where Drouin has been lining up. Phillip Danault, Jacob De La Rose, Paul Byron, Brendan Gallagher and Max Pacioretty all have one shorthanded goal. Alex Galchenyuk and Shaw each have five power play goals. Shaw leads in penalty minutes with 47.

 NASHVILLE

Games this week

vs. Vegas, vs. Arizona, vs. Florida

Rested Team: vs. Florida (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Predators sent Juuse Saros to the minors during their break to get in some playing time and recalled Anders Lindback. Pekka Rinne will join P.K. Subban at the All-Star game. Calle Jarnkrok has two shorthanded goals this season to lead Nashville. The injured Filip Forsberg has nine power play goals. Boy, did they ever steal him from Washington as they gave up Martin Erat and Michael Latta. Erat has played in Europe the last three seasons while Latta has played for four AHL teams in the last season-and-a-half. Forsberg is a star in the NHL and is only 23. Cody McLeod is a healthy scratch in roughly half the Predators games but still leads them in penalty minutes with 72.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ New York Islanders, vs. Washington, @ Philadelphia

Rested Team: @ New York Islanders (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Taylor Hall is going to the All-Star game for the third time. Miles Wood likely wasn’t drafted unless you were in a deep, deep league but he has started the season off nicely in traditional pools with 11 goals and 19 point in addition to 49 penalty minutes. Travis Zajac has only seven points in 24 games but has three goals and five points in his last four games. Sami Vatanen has points in five of his last six games. Brian Gibbons has three shorthanded goals. Hall is tied with Brian Boyle as each have five power play goals this season. As mentioned earlier, Wood leads in penalty minutes. Will Butcher has 14 power play assists but no goals.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

@ Montreal, vs. New Jersey, vs. Boston, @ Chicago

Rested Team: vs. Boston (Thursday)

Tired Team: vs. New Jersey (Tuesday)

Notes

The Islanders play four games this week including three games in four nights. Look for Jaroslav Halak to get the call in goal three times with Thomas Greiss playing once. It was thought that Joshua Ho-Sang had a shot at the Calder before the start of the season but he is back in the minors and was a healthy scratch recently. That’s not good. He could need a change of scenery. The Islanders have called up Michael Dal Colle who was drafted fifth overall in 2014. He had five goals and 18 points in 34 AHL games before his recall. Casey Cizikas, John Tavares, Cal Clutterbuck and Andrew Ladd each have a shorthanded goal. Tavares and Anders Lee each have seven power play goals. Scott Mayfield has 37 penalty minutes, one more than Clutterbuck.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Philadelphia, vs. Buffalo, @ Colorado, @ Los Angeles

Rested Team:  None

Tired Team: @ Los Angeles (Sunday)

Notes

The Rangers play three games in four nights as part of a four game week. Ondrej Pavelec should get the net once with Henrik Lundqvist playing three times. Chris Kreider had rib resection surgery due to a blood clot in his arm and will be reassessed in another six weeks so he is out until at least March. Filip Chytil has five goals and 12 points in the AHL. He was drafted 21st overall in 2017 and the Rangers love his skill set. The Rangers do not have a shorthanded goal this season and are the only team in the NHL not to have one. Mika Zibanejad leads with six power play goals, once ahead of Kreider. Brendan Smith leads the team with 43 penalty minutes.

OTTAWA

Games this week

vs. St. Louis,  vs. Toronto

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Matt Duchene has seven points including four goals, in his last seven games. He is finally showing the Senators what he is capable of since he was traded from Colorado earlier this season. Bobby Ryan missed Wednesday’s game with a hand injury. Colin White replaced him on the top line with Duchene and Mike Hoffman. White was sent back down to the minors after the game as the Senators started their bye week. Tom Pyatt, Nate Thompson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau all have one shorthanded goal. Hoffman leads with four power play goals. Alex Burrows is tops in penalty minutes with 37 but Mark Borowiecki who has 25 in just 12 games should be back in the lineup shortly.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, vs. Toronto, vs. New Jersey, @ Washington

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Washington (Sunday)

Notes

The Flyers are on the ice four times this week including three games in four nights so Michal Neuvirth will get at least one start with Brian Elliott getting the remainder of the starts. Claude Giroux is off to the All-Star game but Jakub Voracek is not despite leading the NHL in assists with 43. Sean Couturier has 23 goals thus far including seven in his last six games. His previous best was 15 in a full schedule. Scott Laughton is the only Flyer with a shorthanded goal. Wayne Simmonds has seven power play goals while Radko Gudas has 57 penalty minutes.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ Los Angeles, @ San Jose

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Los Angeles (Thursday)

Notes

The Penguins play three games in four nights so look for Tristan Jarry to play once with Matt Murray going twice. Phil Kessel leads the Penguins with 47 points this season but was not selected to the All-Star team. Sidney Crosby was and he will make only his third appearance ever in the game. Crosby was the third star of the week as he has a goal and eight points in four games including seven in his last two starts. Bryan Rust is tops on the Penguins with two shorthanded goals. Evgeni Malkin leads with 10 power play goals but Kessel leads the NHL with 27 points including 20 assists. Ryan Reaves has 80 penalty minutes but only 21 in his last 29 games.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

@ Toronto, @ Ottawa, vs. Arizona

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Take a look at Ivan Barbashev who has moved to the top line with Paul Stastny and Vladimir Tarasenko. He has a goal and four assists in three games. Alex Pietrangelo and Brayden Schenn are going to the All-Star game. Jaden Schwartz was walking around without the use of anything earlier in the week. He injured his ankle on December 9 and is not even limping at this time. There is no word on a return date. Kyle Brodziak and Vladimir Sobotka each have a shorthanded goal. Schwartz and Schenn lead with four power play markers. Joel Edmundson has 49 penalty minutes.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

@ Los Angeles, @ Arizona, @ Colorado, vs. Pittsburgh, @ Anaheim

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Arizona (Tuesday), @ Anaheim (Sunday)

Notes

The Sharks get a rare five game week and if you are in weekly transaction pools, take advantage. Martin Jones should get the start in goal on three occasions with Aaron Dell likely to play twice.  Brent Burns is going to his fifth All-Star game. After a horrible start to the season, Burns has 23 points in his last 21 games. Dylan DeMelo is on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. Logan Couture leads the Sharks with 16 goals and his 30 points are tied with Burns. Couture and Chris Tierney each have two shorthanded goals. Couture, Tomas Hertl and Joe Thornton each have five power play goals. Brendan Dillon and Thornton have 38 penalty minutes to lead San Jose.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

vs. Vegas, @ Minnesota

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Lightning lead all NHL teams with four players going to the All-Star game including Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Vasilevskiy may need a break as he has given up 15 goals in his last three starts, while stopping only 74. Hedman was injured Thursday in a knee-on-knee collision with Garnet Hathaway and will be re-evaluated Friday. After going four games without a point, Brayden Point has a goal and four points in his last two games. Tyler Johnson and Point each have two shorthanded goals. Stamkos leads the NHL in power play goals with 12. Hedman is tops in penalty minutes with 32.

TORONTO

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, @ Philadelphia, @ Ottawa

Rested team:  None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Travis Dermott was sent back to the minors with the Maple Leafs on their bye week but BM Lou Lamoriello said that the young defenseman will be recalled when the bye week ends on Tuesday with a game against the Blues. Auston Matthews will represent Toronto at the All-Star game. Nikita Zaitsev will be out another two-three weeks with a foot injury suffered on December 15. Zach Hyman and Leo Komarov lead the Leafs with one shorthanded goal. James van Riemsdyk has seven power play goals, three better than Nazem Kadri. Matt Martin has 40 penalty minutes thus far.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

@ Edmonton, @ Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Canucks finish up their seven game road trip but do get a bit of a break as their bye week is included this week.  Bo Horvat should be back in a couple of weeks. He has been out since December 5 with a fractured ankle. He has been missed as the Canucks are 2-11-2 during his absence from the lineup. Brandon Sutter is expected back on January 14. He has been out with a groin injury since November 24. Brock Boeser will be the only rookie at the All-Star game. The retired Derek Dorsett still leads the Canucks with two shorthanded goals as well as 74 penalty minutes. He last played on November 18. Boeser leads the team with six power play goals.

VEGAS

Games this week

@ Nashville, @ Tampa Bay, @ Florida, @ Carolina

Rested Team: @ Carolina (Sunday)

Tired Team: @ Florida (Friday)

Notes

The Golden Knights are on the road for all four games this week which includes three games in four nights. Marc-Andre Fleury should get the call in net at least twice and likely three times with Malcolm Subban making an appearance in net the rest of the games. Luca Sbisa is out six-eight weeks with a hand injury.  Fleury and James Neal will represent the Golden Knights at the All-Star game. William Karlsson has two shorthanded goals as part of his 22 this season. He should have been selected to the All-Star team. Reilly Smith, Erik Haula and Jonathan Marchessault each have four power play goals. David Perron has 32 penalty minutes, one ahead of Brayden McNabb.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

@ New Jersey, vs. Montreal, vs. Philadelphia

Rested team: vs. Philadelphia (Sunday)

Tired Team: vs. Montreal (Friday)

Notes

The Capitals play three games in four nights so look for Philipp Grubauer to play once with Braden Holtby getting the call in net twice. Coach Barry Trotz was upset that John Carlson was not named to the All-Star team as he has 34 points in 43 games second among defensemen to John Klingberg. Alex Ovechkin will go to the game as captain of the Metropolitan Division. Nicklas Backstrom had eight points in four games before he was held pointless Thursday. Jay Beagle, Brett Connolly and Tom Wilson lead with one shorthanded goal apiece. Ovechkin has eight goals with the man-advantage, one ahead of T.J. Oshie. Wilson leads with 93 penalty minutes which is also the best in the NHL.

WINNIPEG

Games this week

@ Calgary, vs. Vancouver

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Connor Hellebuyck started the season on the bench as the backup to Steve Mason but that quickly changed and he has played well enough to make the All-Star team for the Central Division along with teammate Blake Wheeler. Nikolaj Ehlers had five assists in eight games with nary a goal until a two-goal performance on Tuesday. He has 19 goals and 34 points in 44 games this season. Mark Scheifele, Joel Armia, Brandon Tanev and Tyler Myers each have one shorthanded goal. Patrik Laine is second in the NHL with 11 power play goals. Dustin Byfuglien has 51 penalty minutes and has two goals in his last three games, his first two of the season.
