Yahoo Golf Talk: THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK

Typically a time for the TOUR to travel the globe and play over in Asia for a few weeks, those plans have changed this year. They are hanging around Las Vegas for another week.

Despite the change in location, we will still see the same tournament setup this week at THE CJ CUP. It's a no-cut event with just 78 golfers in the field.

For DFS purposes, that allows you to take some aggressive stances since everyone will be guaranteed four rounds of action, barring a WD.

Diving into the host venue, we have Shadow Creek Golf Course making it's debut in a PGA TOUR stroke-play event. It was used in 2018 for the Tiger vs. Phil showdown.

The course will be played as a par 72 that stretches out past 7,500 yards. Getting a little help in the distance department by playing at around 2,000 feet above sea level. As a traditional par 72 we know that golfers will be guaranteed 16 par-5 chances this week.

The tee-to-green turf is freshly overseeded with ryegrass and the putting surfaces are T1 Bentgrass.

Let's look at some stats that might help us fill out our Yahoo golf lineups:

Bentgrass Putting

We have a new course on hand this week but we do know that golfers will see bentgrass putting surfaces.

When it comes to winning golf tournaments, it always helps to have the ability to lap the field with the flat stick.

Looking at stats over the last year, these golfers have gained the most strokes putting on bentgrass greens:

Mackenzie Hughes
Brendon Todd
Jason Day
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Xander Schauffele
Ian Poulter
Harris English
Abraham Ancer
Gary Woodland
Patrick Cantlay

Jason Day ($35) doesn't provide much of a discount at $35 but he's not that far removed from his hot summer stretch of four straight top 10s. The more recent results are on the other side of the spectrum so there is plenty of risk here. You're paying for upside here, not safety. He's also had his share of success out West with a WGC-Match Play win in Arizona and a pair of victories at Torrey Pines.

Par 5 Scoring

Just like last week, we are going to take a look at par-5 scoring. With no cut to worry about this week, gamers will want to pick up as much hole-by-hole upside as possible and par 5s are the easiest way to do that.

Here are the most consistent par-5 scorers since the restart:

Xander Schauffele
Patrick Cantlay
Tyrrell Hatton
Kevin Streelman
Jon Rahm
Robby Shelton
Dylan Frittelli
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Brooks Koepka
Viktor Hovland

Robby Shelton ($20): The Alabama product was an elite amateur golfer but is still searching for a big breakthrough on the PGA TOUR. He has four top 10s including a pair of third-place finishes but no runner-up finishes or victories yet. Perhaps seeing a fellow Alabama alum (Trey Mullinax) win last week on the Korn Ferry circuit will give him the extra juice needed. Okay, a win is not likely in this strong of a field but as you can see from the par-5 scoring stats above, he has the hole-by-hole scoring capabilities that could prove useful for fantasy owners.

Hopefully these stats will give you some names to dive into when it comes to researching your final selections this week over at Yahoo!
