Custer's stunning win led to big paydays

Updated On: July 13, 2020, 4:49 pm ET

Sunday afternoon at the Kentucky Speedway provided an exciting and very unexpected finish. Cup rookie Cole Custer made a four-wide pass of Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Ryan Blaney on the final lap to win the Quaker State 400.

Custer is the first rookie to win a Nascar Cup Series race in four years. The 22-year-old finished fifth the weekend before at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but Sunday's result was certainly unexpected. Just take a look at the odds.

Dave Sharapan of CG Technology told Rotoworld that Custer was the final racer listed but they did not receive any bets on him.

Bad Beat

At PointsBet sportsbook, Custer closed at 500-1 to win on Sunday. The Action Network’s P.J. Walsh reported that PointsBet took a $90 bet on Custer. Wow. A $45,000 payday. Incredible.

Not so fast.

The bettor opted to cash out midway through the race. Instead of $45,000, the bettor walked away with $120.

Fade or Follow?

Since Cole Custer won on Sunday, he qualified for the NASCAR All-Star Race on Wednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Custer is +4000 to win the race and +900 to finish in the top 3.
