Industry CFF P5 Bestball Breakdown

by Thor Nystrom
Updated On: July 21, 2020, 1:33 am ET

After the Fourth of July holiday, I gathered some of the top college fantasy football experts from around the country for a pair of BestBall drafts, one for the Group of Five, one for the Power Five. Today, we're going to run down the P5 draft. If you're looking for our G5 breakdown, check it out here.

Each owner was asked five questions about their draft process -- favorite picks, most unenviable picks, best teams, favorite sleepers, all that good stuff. Below you sits nearly 10,000 words of #CFF goodness from the top experts in the country. Owner answers begin below the full draft results.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

To be honest I didn’t go in with a “grand” strategy. The aim was to simply pay attention to off weeks and make sure that I wasn’t overloaded on any one. Week 6 was a bit of an issue in the later rounds, but I feel as though I’m well-positioned to manage it well. As for the makeup of my roster, I like the quarterback and tight end positions. Looking for a big sophomore year from Jayden Daniels, and I’m on the Peyton Hendershot bandwagon as well. Not too big on my work at running back, however. There are injury concerns (Stevie Scott III and Master Teague), and Rhamondre Stevenson has a five-game suspension to deal with. Had to cover my tracks with regard to Stevenson and pick up Seth McGowan, but I’m not sure how much he’ll get to carry the ball those five games as the backup.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

Favorite pick would be Minnesota WR Rashod Bateman in the first round. Love what he brings to the table, and after a very good 2019 I think he’ll be even better this fall. The pick I regret: Stevenson. Without the suspension grabbing him late wouldn’t be a bad deal, but there were better options on the board. That’s what happens when you don’t pay attention.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

John Laub grabbing Sam Howell one pick before I got on the clock. That one still stings.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

On my roster I’ll go with Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle. After putting up a receiving line of 29/381/3 in 2018, he accounted for 45/604/3 last season. He’ll be a key target for QB Michael Penix Jr. this fall, provided the quarterback can stay healthy. I expect Fryfogle to visit the end zone more often as a senior.

For the league, I’ll go with Thor’s pick of Pitt WR Shocky Jacques-Louis in the 16th round. He put up a line of 23/348/2 last season, which doesn’t jump off the page, but it’s understandable when taking into consideration the presence of Maurice Ffrench and Taysir Mack. Well Ffrench is gone, and there will be room for others to step forward. I see Jacques-Louis making that leap.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

I like what Cam was able to do with his roster, especially at the top. Following up Justin Fields with Jermar Jefferson and Isaiah Spiller was good work, and he did well in the middle rounds as well.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

I always take a BPA strategy; for better or worse. That being said, I felt like the depth at quarterback this year was a little weaker, and I was hoping to make it out of this draft with one of the "elite" signal-callers. I did not. That being said, I'm a big fan of what I was able to add at the skill positions, so, overall I think I was able to implement my "strategy" and come away with a solid team -- on paper, anyway.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

I was very pleased to see CJ Verdell make it to me in the fourth round. Oregon will be more reliant on the run this year, I believe, and while there are some mouths to feed in this backfield, I think we saw that Verdell is the most talented of the options at the end of the year. Adding him as my RB2 was a coup, in my humble estimation.

On the other side, I probably could have done better than Kellen Mond at QB1. I think we've seen what he's capable of, but that's both a compliment and a...well, not a compliment. In hindsight, an option like Alan Bowman, Micale Cunningham or John Rhys Pliumlee would have been a wiser selection.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

George Pickens in the second round. I gave serious thought to taking Pickens with my first-round pick over Journey Brown and then again over Sage Surratt, but just couldn't pull the trigger. I kind of wish I had. Did you see what he did against Baylor as a freshman? Goodness gracious. He might be a superstar. Heck, he might be the best wide receiver in football this year if we do have games.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Selfishly, I'll say Terrell Bynum. Bynum was the Huskies best wideout at the end of the year, and with Aaron Fuller and Myles Bryant gone, there's ample opportunity for him to be the top option; with all due respect to Puca Nacua and some talented younger players who haven't gotten an opportunity. Some question marks at quarterback for Washington, but I can see big things for Bynum.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

I'm going with Nate Marchese, and yes, he's the lucky drafter who ended up with Pickens. On top of that he's got Rondale Moore, two solid tailbacks in SaRodorick Thompson and David Bailey, and while his quarterbacks are extremely volatile in Rhys Plumlee and Penix Jr., they come with high ceilings. Wouldn't shock me at all if Marchese ended up taking it all.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

I've been drafting a lot of seasonal best-ball teams this year, so I felt more prepared than I usually do. I knew that I wanted to hit WR early, and then I have a steady crop of receivers that I take almost every draft that I believe is severely undervalued. I was able to execute my plan to near perfection. Now that the season is abridged, I'll never get to test this, but I have seven receivers on my team. I believe five of the seven would have surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, and one of them would have exceeded 1,000 on the ground (Felton is a RB for UCLA but listed WR in this league). I feel confident I have the best WR group in the league. As a result of my pounding WR, I fell victim to several runs at RB that left me thinner than I would prefer. I've got some solid options, but things could go several ways with this group. I have both a high ceiling and a pitifully low floor at RB. I've got a 30+ catch guy at TE and two wildcards, so I'm cool with that setup. Lastly, things got thin at QB pretty quickly due to this format. I've been punting QB in most of my drafts until late, but scarcity is real in this format, so I made some moves earlier than I would in a full FBS player pool with a reasonable amount of owners. I wish I had taken my third QB earlier. Overall, I think this would have been a team with a wide range of outcomes, but I'm pleased with it. I think this team could contend.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

My favorite pick was Shi Smith in round 8 at 116th overall. He was the WR45 off the board, and I believe he should be a top ten option. With Mike Bobo's hiring at South Carolina, we can expect Smith to step into an opportunity that has produced, on average, 85-1242-10 over the past five seasons. Let's be conservative and shave 20% off those figures; there still won't be close to 45 other receivers that beat those numbers. Smith has the potential to outproduce several guys taken in the first few rounds of this draft. I know I'm only supposed to have one, but Demetric Felton as a WR and Tanner Mordecai as QB66 are my honorable mentions. I regret waiting a few times at running back and quarterback, but I don't have any player-specific regrets that come to mind.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Sorry, I can't do just one.

QB: Michael Penix - Marchese - QB27, Charlie Brewer - Downey - QB29, Cammon Cooper - DiSalvo - QB30, Brennan Armstrong - Brandt - QB31

RB: David Bailey - Marchese - RB20, Jashaun Corbin - Lindquist - RB28, Austin Jones - Bainbridge - RB39

WR: Jahan Dotson - DiSalvo - WR35

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

The player with the best chance on my team is Miami WR Dee Wiggins. Replace Wiggins's name with those of N'Keal Harry, Brandon Aiyuk, James Proche, and Reggie Roberson. That is the role and alignment that he will be stepping into for the Canes. He was taken as the WR67. Froton took Asim Rose as RB56 in Round 13, which I really liked. Brandt took newly minted Missouri Tiger, Damon Hazelton, in the twelfth as WR71. I love all of those guys quite a bit at their costs.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

This is such a challenging format to draft in. The small player pools and large owner pools are strenuous to navigate. I felt like the guys that I've been drafting with a lot were sniping me regularly. Joe, Mike, Greg, Zach, and Nate make up that group, so I had a decent idea of how they liked to build their teams, and it seemed like they had eyes on my queue at times. Wait, did they?

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

Having the third pick in the draft, I was locked in on Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, or Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. I was hoping for one of the two quarterbacks, particularly Fields, but was still satisfied with landing Ehlinger. In a 2-QB format, I wanted to get the first quarterback out of the way, and then sit back on the position, only to jump back in when the value was right, securing running backs and receivers until that moment. This strategy was very different from my G5 draft, when I waited until round 8 to draft my first quarterback. Drafting closer to the elbow makes handcuffing a little easier, so I jumped back in at quarterback in round 8, taking Cammon Cooper at 8.14, and then following up with Jayden de Laura at 9.03. I like having the Texas and Washington State combination heading into the season. However, I put a lot of pressure on myself to hit at running back in the later rounds, as I only selected two running backs in the first eleven rounds. To make matters worse, Eric Froton sniped LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price one pick before me in round 14, as my plan was to draft Davis-Price as a handcuff to my seventh-round selection, John Emery.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

I can’t say that I regret my second-round selection of North Carolina receiver Dyami Brown, who I value more than Dazz Newsome heading into 2020, but if I knew that I was going to land Oklahoma receivers Charleston Rambo and Theo Wease, and Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson within the first six rounds, I would have gone running back in round 2 instead of receiver. By the time we got to round 6, there was better value at receiver than running back, which was different from all other drafts I’ve participated in throughout the spring and summer.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Mark Lindquist selected Florida State running back Jashaun Corbin with pick 5.08. There was no guarantee that he would have fallen to me at 5.14, but I knew that I needed another running back and I was eying Corbin. If I would have gotten Corbin in that round instead of Dotson, or have landed a running back in round 2 instead of Dyami Brown, I would be feeling great about my chances of winning this league.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Scott Bogman drafted Jack Plummer at 10.11 and Zach Hall selected Austin Burton at 12.07. As long as Purdue doesn’t play quarterback roulette this year, one of those guys has a chance to put up big numbers in the Boilermakers’ offense throwing the ball to receivers Rondale Moore and David Bell.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

I like the way Thor cornered the market on the Mississippi State offense, the USC running game, and the Baylor and Pitt receivers, but the roster that seems most balanced to me, particularly through 15 rounds, is Nate Marchese’s roster. Nate might just be the team to beat.
